Park Güell was meant to be a gated garden estate for wealthy families. Only two houses were ever built, and the city bought the land and opened it as a public park in 1926. What remains is Gaudí at play: the mosaic lizard on the steps, the long serpentine bench, and a view over the city to the sea.
The central Monumental Zone has timed tickets. One tour here includes skip-the-line entry together with the Sagrada Família; the other passes the park on a full-day city tour.
What to expect on a Park Güell experience
With entry, you walk through the Monumental Zone: the gatehouses, the stairway with the lizard, the market hall of columns and the terrace with the bench.
Getting around
Park Güell sits on Carmel hill. From Lesseps or Vallcarca metro (L3) it is a steep 15-minute walk up; the tour with entry includes transport from the Sagrada Família.
