Florence (Firenze), the capital of Tuscany, is one of the great art cities of the world and the birthplace of the Renaissance. Its entire historic centre is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, built on the wealth of medieval banking and wool trading and shaped above all by the Medici, who ruled and patronised the city for three centuries.

Its skyline belongs to the Duomo — Santa Maria del Fiore — and Brunelleschi's terracotta dome, still the largest masonry dome ever built, beside Giotto's bell tower and the Baptistery with its gilded bronze doors. Piazza della Signoria remains the civic heart, overlooked by the fortress-like Palazzo Vecchio and lined with sculpture under the Loggia dei Lanzi, while the Uffizi Gallery holds one of the world's great collections of Renaissance painting, from Botticelli to Leonardo and Michelangelo, whose David stands nearby in the Accademia.

The Ponte Vecchio, lined with goldsmiths' shops, crosses the Arno to the Oltrarno — the quieter left bank of artisan workshops, the vast Pitti Palace and the Boboli Gardens, rising to the panorama at Piazzale Michelangelo. Around the monuments runs an everyday Tuscan city of markets, trattorias and wine bars, with the vineyards and hill towns of Chianti and Siena within easy reach.

On a walking tour of Florence you can expect a guided route on foot through a compact historic centre, with a local guide sharing history, stories and practical tips along the way. Because the centre is small and largely pedestrianised, tours cover a lot of ground at a comfortable pace.

Spring (April–June) and autumn (September–October) are the best seasons for walking tours, with warm days, softer light and the Tuscan countryside at its most beautiful. Summer (July–August) is hot and very busy, with long queues at the Duomo and the Uffizi — early-morning tours are far more comfortable. Winter (November–March) is cool and much quieter, the best time to see the museums and churches without crowds, with crisp bright days between spells of rain. Walking tours run all year; comfortable shoes matter on the stone streets in every season.
