Free Tours in Buenos Aires

Frequently asked questions

Yes — they are tip-based free tours. There is no fixed price to join, and at the end you give your guide whatever you feel the experience was worth. You still reserve a place in advance so the guide knows how many people to expect.

The classic introduction is the historic-centre walk from the Congreso along Avenida de Mayo to Plaza de Mayo and the Casa Rosada. If you have a second morning, the Retiro and Recoleta route covers the city's Belle Époque palaces and the families behind them. Compare the tours above and book directly.

Yes — departures run in both English and Spanish, and the languages offered are shown on each tour listing. Check the listing before booking so you join the right departure.

The historic-centre walk runs about three hours and the Retiro and Recoleta route about two and a half. Each listing shows its exact duration and start time.

The central and northern neighbourhoods our tours cover are busy and well used by locals throughout the day. As in any large capital, keep your phone and bag close on crowded streets and around transport hubs. Walking with a local guide is also the easiest way to learn which streets are worth wandering afterwards.

Yes, please reserve your place. Free tours have limited group sizes and popular departures fill up, especially in spring and autumn. You can check availability and book directly on each tour listing.

Buenos Aires is a city of grand avenues, faded palaces, tango in the street and some of the most passionate political history in the Americas. It rewards walking more than almost any capital in South America, and our guides are porteños who live it. Browse our free walking tours of Buenos Aires below.

About Buenos Aires

Set on the bank of the Río de la Plata, Buenos Aires is Argentina's capital and a city built by immigration — Spanish, Italian, and more — which is why its boulevards can feel closer to Paris or Madrid than to the rest of the continent. The civic heart is Plaza de Mayo, ringed by the pink Casa Rosada, the Cabildo and the Metropolitan Cathedral, and still the stage for Argentine political life.

From there, Avenida de Mayo runs west past the extraordinary Palacio Barolo and the century-old cafés to the Congreso, crossing the Obelisco and the vast Avenida 9 de Julio on the way. North lie the aristocratic quarters of Retiro and Recoleta, with their French-inspired mansions, Plaza San Martín and the famous cemetery; south are the cobbles and antique markets of San Telmo. Tango, football and a fierce café culture are never far from any of it.

What to expect on a Buenos Aires experience

Our Buenos Aires experiences are guided walks led by local porteño guides, and all of them are free tours — you pay your guide what you think the tour was worth at the end:

  • The heart of the city — a three-hour walk from the Congreso along Avenida de Mayo to Plaza de Mayo and the Casa Rosada, taking in the Obelisco and the Palacio Barolo.
  • Aristocratic Buenos Aires — two and a half hours through Retiro and Recoleta, past the palaces of Calle Arroyo and Avenida Alvear, and the story of the families who built them.
  • Argentine history, told properly — guides connect Perón, the immigration waves, tango and football to the way the city lives today, rather than reciting dates at monuments.

Tours run in English and Spanish depending on the departure. More Buenos Aires experiences are being added by our local guides — availability, languages and duration for each tour are shown in the live listings above.

Best time to visit

Buenos Aires is in the southern hemisphere, so the seasons are reversed. Spring (September to November) and autumn (March to May) are the best times to walk the city — warm days, cool evenings and the jacarandas in bloom in November.

Summer (December to February) is hot and humid and the city empties out as locals head for the coast; morning tours are far more comfortable. Winter (June to August) is mild rather than cold and rarely freezes, which makes it a quiet, cheap and perfectly walkable season. Bring comfortable shoes and a layer for the river breeze whenever you come.

Getting around

The centre is flat and walkable, and the neighbourhoods our tours cover — Monserrat, San Nicolás, Retiro and Recoleta — connect easily on foot. Beyond that, the Subte (six lines, A to E plus H) is the fastest way across town, and the colectivo bus network reaches everywhere else. Both use the rechargeable SUBE card, which is worth buying at a kiosk on your first day.

Ezeiza (EZE) handles international flights about 35 km from the centre, while Aeroparque (AEP) sits on the riverfront minutes from Recoleta and covers domestic and regional routes. Taxis and ride apps are cheap and plentiful. Our tours meet at a well-known landmark in the centre — the exact meeting point is shown on each tour listing.
