Buenos Aires is too big to see. It is a city of barrios, each with its own character and a firm opinion of the others, and any attempt to take it all in at once ends as a blur of wide avenues. The free walking tours solve that by not trying — each one takes a single part of the city and walks it properly.
One works the historic centre, starting by the Congress and finishing in the streets where Argentine politics has actually been conducted — the square that fills whenever the country has something to say. The other goes north through Retiro and Recoleta, where the fortunes made in the nineteenth century built their houses, and then their tombs.
Both are pay-what-you-want. You reserve without paying, and settle with your guide at the end for whatever you thought the walk was worth.
What to expect on a Free Tours in Buenos Aires experience
Two to three hours of flat walking, and more distance than you expect — the blocks here are long and the gaps between landmarks wider than a map makes them look.
The centre route is the historically dense one, and is better on a weekday when the government buildings and the streets around them are in use. Retiro and Recoleta is the calmer walk, and the one to take for the city at its most ornamental.
Remember the seasons are reversed. January and February are hot and much of Buenos Aires is somewhere else; the comfortable walking months are the southern spring and autumn, roughly October and April.
