Mount Teide is the beating heart of Tenerife — a 3,715-metre volcano, the highest peak in Spain, whose national park sits above the clouds in a landscape so otherworldly it has stood in for Mars on screen. It is one of the most visited national parks in the world, and its protected dark skies make it a global favourite for stargazing.

Our guided Teide tours range from morning trips through the volcanic caldera to premium sunset-and-stargazing experiences with a picnic above the clouds. Local guides handle the long, winding mountain roads and time your visit for the clearest skies and the best light.

About Teide Tours in Tenerife

Teide National Park is a UNESCO World Heritage Site at the centre of Tenerife, the largest of the Canary Islands. The volcano rises from a vast caldera of frozen lava flows, twisted rock formations and mineral-streaked slopes — a stark, beautiful moonscape unlike anywhere else in Europe.

The park's altitude, dry air and low light pollution make it one of the best places on Earth to watch the sunset and the stars; it sits under an internationally protected sky. Because it lies well inland and high above the coastal resorts, a guided tour is the relaxed way to reach it and understand what you're seeing.

What to expect on a Teide Tours in Tenerife experience

On a guided Teide tour you can expect to climb from the coast up through changing landscapes — pine forest, then the lunar caldera — with a guide explaining the volcano's geology and legends. Depending on the tour you may:

  • Cross the Teide caldera among lava fields and dramatic rock formations
  • Watch a spectacular sunset from above the clouds
  • Enjoy a guided stargazing session under Teide's protected dark skies, often with a picnic
  • Combine Teide with the Masca valley and northern Tenerife on a full-day trip
  • Take in viewpoints such as the Roques de García

Most tours include hotel pickup; the cable car to the summit is a separate, weather-dependent option and is not always included — check each tour card.

Best time to visit

Teide can be visited all year, and the caldera is often clear and sunny even when the coast is cloudy. Winter can bring snow to the upper slopes (and occasional road closures), while summer offers the warmest, most stable evenings for sunset and stargazing. Spring and autumn are excellent all-rounders.

Timing within the day matters most: sunset-and-stargazing tours catch golden hour and then the emerging stars, while morning tours give the crispest views over the caldera. Whenever you go, the temperature at altitude is far colder than at sea level — especially after dark.

Getting around

Teide National Park sits high in the centre of the island, roughly an hour and a half by road from the southern resorts and from Santa Cruz. The mountain roads are long and winding, so most visitors join a guided tour with hotel pickup rather than self-driving after dark.

Within the park, tours stop at the main viewpoints, the caldera and the cable-car base station. If you plan to ride the cable car toward the summit, note that it runs subject to weather and that hiking to the very top of the crater requires a separate free permit booked well in advance.

Frequently asked questions

It depends what you're after. Sunset-and-stargazing tours combine golden-hour colour with world-class night skies, while morning tours give the clearest daytime views across the caldera. Compare the options in this collection to find the right fit.

Most Teide tours include pickup from hotels in the main resort areas of Tenerife. The exact pickup points and times are listed on each tour card.

Our premium sunset tour includes a guided stargazing session above the clouds, making the most of Teide's internationally protected dark skies. Telescopes and astronomy guiding vary by tour.

Tours travel through the caldera to the main viewpoints and the cable-car base. The cable car itself and summit access are weather-dependent and not always included; reaching the very top of the crater needs a separate free permit. Check the individual tour.

Warm layers are essential — it is cold at altitude, especially at sunset and after dark. Bring closed shoes, water, and a jacket even in summer. Sunset and stargazing tours run into the evening.

Both. This collection includes private tours for a tailored pace and small-group departures that are easier on the budget. Each tour page shows the format.
