About Málaga
Málaga sits on Andalusia's southern coast, cradled between the Montes de Málaga and the Mediterranean. Its skyline is crowned by the Alcazaba, a beautifully preserved 11th-century Moorish fortress-palace, and the higher Gibralfaro Castle, linked by ramparts that offer sweeping views over the port. Below stand the Roman Theatre and the mighty Renaissance Cathedral, nicknamed La Manquita (the one-armed lady) for its unfinished second tower.
This is the birthplace of Pablo Picasso, celebrated at the Museo Picasso Málaga in the Palacio de Buenavista and the Fundación Picasso in the house where he was born on Plaza de la Merced. Art lovers also flock to the Centre Pompidou Málaga beside the marina and the Carmen Thyssen Museum.
Wander the historic centre around Calle Larios, the elegant marble shopping street, then lose yourself in the tapas bars of the Soho art district and the redeveloped Muelle Uno waterfront. Best time to visit
Spring (April–June) and autumn (September–October) are ideal, with warm days around 22–28°C, blue skies and thinner crowds. Holy Week (Semana Santa) in spring fills the streets with dramatic processions.
Summer (July–August) is hot and busy, often above 30°C, perfect for the beach but best for early-morning sightseeing. The Feria de Málaga in August is a week-long fiesta. Winter stays mild (15–18°C) and sunny, making Málaga a rewarding year-round destination.
Getting around
Málaga's compact historic centre is best explored on foot, with most major sights within a 15-minute walk of each other. A modern metro and an extensive bus network reach the wider city, while the Cercanías C-1 commuter train links the centre to the airport in about 12 minutes and continues along the coast to Torremolinos and Fuengirola.
Taxis and ride-hailing are plentiful and affordable. To reach Gibralfaro Castle you can walk the scenic uphill path from the Alcazaba or take bus 35. Bike lanes and city-bike stations make cycling the seafront promenade easy and pleasant.
