Frequently asked questions
Take a day trip to the Phi Phi Islands and Maya Bay, explore James Bond Island and the sea caves of Phang Nga Bay, and try the Hanuman World zipline. Visit an elephant reserve, and see a Muay Thai fight or the Carnival Magic show in the evening.
Yes. The trip shows Maya Bay, clear water for snorkelling and the cliffs of Phi Phi Leh. A speedboat reaches the islands in about 1 hour. A yacht is slower but more relaxed.
Khao Phing Kan is a limestone island in Phang Nga Bay. Its rock tower, Ko Tapu, became famous in the 1974 James Bond film The Man with the Golden Gun. Tours often add canoeing through sea caves and lagoons.
November to April has the calmest sea. From May to October some trips can stop on rough days, so keep a free day in your plan.
Some reserves let you watch, feed and walk with the elephants without riding them. Check what each experience includes before you book.
Plan at least 4 days: 1 day for Phi Phi, 1 day for Phang Nga Bay, 1 day for an adventure park or elephant reserve, and 1 day on the beach.
Phuket is the starting point for the best-known island trips in Thailand. Speedboats and yachts cross the Andaman Sea to the Phi Phi Islands and Maya Bay, and longtail boats wind through the limestone towers of Phang Nga Bay to James Bond Island and its sea caves, often with a canoe trip inside the cliffs.
Back on land, fly through the rainforest on the Hanuman World zipline, race down the luge track, or spend a day at the Andamanda water park. Visit an elephant reserve, and in the evening watch the Carnival Magic show or a Muay Thai fight in Patong.
About Phuket
Phuket is the largest island in Thailand, in the Andaman Sea on the west coast. A bridge links it to the mainland. The island is about 48 kilometres long, with beaches along the west coast, such as Patong, Karon and Kata, and hills covered in rainforest inland.
Phuket Town, in the south-east, has old Sino-Portuguese shophouses from the tin-mining era of the 19th century. Today, tourism is the main industry, and boats leave from piers around the island for Phang Nga Bay, the Phi Phi Islands and the Similan Islands.
What to expect on a Phuket experience
Most island trips last a full day, from about 8am to 5pm. They include hotel pickup, the boat, lunch and snorkelling gear, but national park fees are sometimes paid on the day. Speedboats are fast but can be bumpy. Big boats and yachts are slower and more comfortable.
Bring swimwear, a towel, sun cream and cash for park fees and extras. Many tours ask you to choose your pickup area, such as Patong, Kata, Karon or Kamala.
Best time to visit
November to April is the dry season, with calm seas and the best conditions for island trips. December to February is the busiest time.
May to October is the south-west monsoon. Some boat trips stop on rough days, and Maya Bay closes for part of the season so the reef can recover. Land activities run all year.
Getting around
Phuket has little public transport for visitors. Most people use taxis, ride-hailing apps or hotel transfers, and many tours include pickup from the main beaches. The airport is in the north of the island, about 45 minutes from Patong.
Boats for Phi Phi and Phang Nga Bay leave from piers such as Rassada, Ao Po and Chalong. Your tour tells you which pier to use.
