About Edinburgh
Edinburgh's Old Town and New Town together form a UNESCO World Heritage Site, packed into a compact, walkable centre. At its heart runs the Royal Mile, linking Edinburgh Castle on its craggy rock down to the Palace of Holyroodhouse. In between lie hidden closes, the Grassmarket, Victoria Street and centuries of stories — from royalty and religion to plague, poets and the origins of Harry Potter.
For bigger horizons, Edinburgh is also the perfect launchpad for the Scottish Highlands — dramatic glens, sea lochs and film-famous landmarks like the Glenfinnan Viaduct are all within a day's reach. Best time to visit
Late spring (May–June) and early autumn (September) offer the best balance of long daylight hours, milder weather and thinner crowds — ideal for walking tours and Highlands day trips.
Summer (July–August) is peak season and coincides with the world-famous Fringe and festivals, so the city is lively but busy. Winter is cold, dark early and often wet, but atmospheric and quiet. Whenever you visit, pack layers and a waterproof — Edinburgh weather changes fast — and comfortable shoes for the cobbles and hills.
Getting around
Edinburgh's centre is compact and best explored on foot — the Old Town, Royal Mile and New Town are all within easy walking distance, though the streets are hilly and cobbled in places. Lothian Buses and the tram cover the wider city on a simple flat fare.
Edinburgh Airport (EDI) connects to the centre in about 30 minutes by tram or Airlink bus, and Waverley and Haymarket stations link the city by rail.
