Frequently asked questions
See the rice terraces and the Monkey Forest in Ubud, watch the sunset at Tanah Lot or Uluwatu, take a day trip to Nusa Penida and see a Kecak fire dance. Waterfalls such as Tegenungan and Tukad Cepung, and a Balinese cooking class, are also popular.
Yes, if you like dramatic coastal views. Kelingking Beach, Broken Beach and Angel's Billabong are some of the most photographed places in Indonesia. The day starts early, the boat crossing can be rough, and the island roads are slow, so a tour with hotel pickup is the easiest way to go.
Cover your shoulders and knees, and wear a sarong and a sash. Many temples lend or rent a sarong at the entrance. Remove your shoes where you see others do the same.
Most full-day tours include pickup and drop-off from hotels in the main areas, such as Kuta, Seminyak, Canggu, Sanur, Nusa Dua and Ubud. Shows and attraction tickets usually do not include transport.
Plan at least 5 days: 2 days around Ubud, 1 day for Nusa Penida and 2 days on the south coast. With a week or more, add Mount Batur and the temples of the east.
The Kecak is a Balinese dance drama created in the 1930s. A large circle of men chant "cak" in rhythm while dancers act out a story from the Ramayana. The most famous shows are at sunset at Uluwatu and on Melasti Beach, and in the evening in Ubud.
Green rice terraces, temples on the edge of the sea and waterfalls in the jungle make Bali one of the easiest islands in Asia to explore on a day tour. Ubud, in the hills, is the centre for culture: the Sacred Monkey Forest, the Tegallalang rice terraces and the water temple of Tirta Empul are all within a short drive.
From the south coast, a speedboat takes you to Nusa Penida for the cliffs of Kelingking Beach and the natural pool of Angel's Billabong. In the evening, watch a Kecak fire dance at sunset, or cook Balinese food on an organic farm. Most tours include pickup from your hotel.
About Bali
Bali is an island province of Indonesia, between Java and Lombok. Most of Indonesia is Muslim, but about 9 in 10 people in Bali follow Balinese Hinduism. Thousands of temples, daily offerings of flowers and rice, and a full calendar of ceremonies shape life on the island.
The south, around Kuta, Seminyak, Jimbaran and Nusa Dua, has the beaches and most of the hotels. Ubud, in the centre, is known for dance, painting and craft villages. The north and east rise to the volcanoes of Mount Batur and Mount Agung, the highest point of the island.
What to expect on a Bali experience
Most Bali day tours are private or small-group tours by car. A driver-guide collects you from your hotel, and a full day lasts 8 to 12 hours. Entrance fees are often included, lunch often is not. Check each tour for what it includes.
At temples, cover your shoulders and knees. Many temples lend or rent a sarong at the gate. Paths to waterfalls usually have many steps, so wear shoes with good grip and bring swimwear if you want to swim.
Best time to visit
The dry season, from April to October, has the most sunshine and the calmest sea for trips to Nusa Penida. July and August are the busiest months.
The wet season, from November to March, brings short, heavy rain, often in the afternoon. The rice fields are at their greenest and the waterfalls are at their fullest. Plan outdoor sights for the morning.
Getting around
Bali has no train and little public transport for visitors. Most travellers use a private driver, a ride-hailing app or a tour with hotel pickup. Traffic in the south is slow, so a trip from Seminyak to Ubud can take 1 to 2 hours.
For Nusa Penida and the other small islands, fast boats leave from Sanur on the east coast. The crossing takes about 30 to 45 minutes.
