Most people do Toledo as a half-day from Madrid: up on the train, a photograph from the far bank, a look at the cathedral, back by dinner. It is a poor way to treat a city that spent centuries as the most important place in Spain.
The old town sits on a granite spur inside a bend of the Tagus — walled, steep, and almost unchanged in plan since the Middle Ages. Christian, Muslim and Jewish Toledo overlapped here more closely than anywhere else on the peninsula, and the evidence is still standing: a cathedral raised on the site of the main mosque, synagogues built with Moorish arches, workshops making the same steel they have made for centuries.
The walks are short and specific rather than sweeping — a fast circuit of the essentials, a route through the old Jewish quarter, or the city after dark by its legends and its underground passages. You book without paying, and give your guide what you thought it was worth at the end.
What to expect on a Free Tours in Toledo experience
Hills. Toledo is built on a rock and almost nothing in the old town is flat; the routes climb and descend constantly on stone polished by several centuries of feet. Sensible shoes matter more here than in most cities.
The walks are deliberately short, around an hour and a half, which is the right length for the gradient and for the summer heat. Coming from Madrid for the day, you can fit one in and still have your afternoon.
The night tour is a different proposition — same hills, colder air, and a route that drops below street level in places.
