Frequently asked questions
After the earthquake of 1693, Ragusa rebuilt itself in the Baroque style, and the result is one of the most beautiful old towns in Sicily. Around it, dry-stone walls divide the Hyblaean plateau into farms, vineyards and carob groves. Choose from cooking classes and experiences around Ragusa below.
About Ragusa
Ragusa has two parts: the upper town, built after the earthquake, and Ragusa Ibla, the older town on its own hill. Ibla is part of the UNESCO site Late Baroque Towns of the Val di Noto, with the Cathedral of San Giorgio at the top of a long flight of steps and the Giardino Ibleo at its edge.
Nearby Modica is famous for its cold-worked chocolate, and Scicli for its Baroque churches. Around Vittoria, vineyards produce Cerasuolo di Vittoria, the only DOCG wine of Sicily. The coast at Marina di Ragusa and Punta Secca has long sandy beaches.
What to expect on a Ragusa experience
Experiences around Ragusa focus on food and Baroque towns:
- Cooking classes — fresh pasta and Sicilian dishes on country estates.
- Wine and food — Cerasuolo di Vittoria wine, olive oil and Modica chocolate.
- Baroque towns — Ragusa Ibla, Modica, Scicli and Noto.
Best time to visit
April to June and September to October are warm and good for walks between the Baroque towns. July and August are hot and best for the beaches. Winters are mild, and many country restaurants stay open all year.
Getting around
Comiso Airport is about 20 km from Ragusa, and Catania Airport is about 1 hour 30 minutes away by road. Buses link Ragusa with Catania, Modica and Noto, but a car is the easiest way to reach country estates and the coast. Ragusa Ibla is best explored on foot.
