Prague is two cities with a river between them, and the free walking tours divide along the same line. On the right bank is the Old Town — the astronomical clock, the square it stands on, and the lanes running off it towards the old Jewish quarter. Cross Charles Bridge and you are in Malá Strana, climbing baroque streets towards the castle.
Guides here are paid by the group rather than by the hour, which tends to sharpen them. You reserve a place at no cost, walk for a couple of hours, and give what you thought it was worth at the end.
If you have two mornings, do both sides. The Old Town first, to learn how the city fits together; the castle second, for the climb and the view back over the rooftops.
What to expect on a Free Tours in Prague experience
Cobbles, and a great many of them. The centre is medieval and uneven underfoot, so bring shoes you can spend two hours walking in.
The castle route is the more demanding — it crosses the bridge and climbs through Malá Strana, gaining real height before the gates. The Old Town route is flat by comparison.
It all happens outdoors, and the tours run through the winter, when Prague is at its most atmospheric and its coldest. Between November and March, dress for it properly.
