Frequently asked questions
Padua is a university city with eight centuries of history. A short ride south, at the foot of the Euganean Hills, the towns of Abano Terme and Montegrotto Terme form one of the largest thermal spa areas in Europe. Compare spa days and thermal pool tickets below.
About Padua
Padua's university, founded in 1222, counted Galileo among its teachers. The city's 14th-century fresco cycles are a UNESCO World Heritage Site, led by Giotto's Scrovegni Chapel. The Basilica of St Anthony draws pilgrims from all over the world, and Prato della Valle is one of the largest squares in Europe. The Botanical Garden, created in 1545, is the oldest university garden still in its original place.
South-west of the city, hot water rises from deep under the Euganean Hills. In Abano Terme and Montegrotto Terme, many hotels have their own thermal pools, and the local mineral mud is used in spa treatments.
What to expect on a Padua experience
Most experiences near Padua centre on the thermal towns:
- Thermal pool entry — day or half-day access to indoor and outdoor pools with hydromassage.
- Day spa packages — pools combined with saunas, treatments and massages.
- City sights — Giotto's frescoes, the basilica and the old university.
Best time to visit
The thermal pools are warm all year, and many people prefer them in autumn and winter, when the outdoor pools steam in the cold air. Spring is ideal for walks in the Euganean Hills. For the Scrovegni Chapel, book a time slot early in any season, because the number of visitors is limited.
Getting around
Trains link Padua with Venice in 30 to 45 minutes. The Terme Euganee station on the line to Bologna serves Abano and Montegrotto, and buses run from Padua to Abano. Many thermal hotels are within walking distance of each other. Venice Marco Polo Airport is about 45 minutes away by road.
