Frequently asked questions
Kayak and snorkel in Ang Thong Marine Park, take a day trip to Ko Tao and Ko Nang Yuan, visit Koh Tan and Koh Madsum by longtail boat, and join a Thai cooking class.
Yes. The park has more than 40 islands with limestone cliffs, lagoons and quiet beaches. Most tours combine kayaking, snorkelling and a viewpoint walk.
Yes. A speedboat reaches Ko Tao in about 1.5 to 2 hours. Day trips usually include snorkelling and a stop at Ko Nang Yuan, three small islands joined by a sandbar.
The heaviest rain falls from October to December. Boat trips can stop on rough days, so keep a free day in your plan.
Plan at least 4 days: 1 day for Ang Thong, 1 day for Ko Tao, and 2 days for the beaches and the island.
Koh Samui is the base for some of the best sea trips in the Gulf of Thailand. Kayak between the limestone islands of Ang Thong Marine Park, or take a speedboat north to Ko Tao and the white sandbar of Ko Nang Yuan for a day of snorkelling.
Closer to the coast, a traditional longtail boat takes you to the quiet islands of Koh Tan and Koh Madsum. On land, shop for herbs and spices at a local market and learn to cook Thai dishes with a local chef.
About Koh Samui
Koh Samui is the second-largest island in Thailand, in the Gulf of Thailand off the east coast of the south. It has an airport with direct flights from Bangkok, and ferries link it to the mainland at Surat Thani.
The busiest beach is Chaweng on the east coast. Lamai, Bophut with its old Fisherman's Village, and the quieter west coast offer other places to stay. Coconut groves and a hilly, forested centre fill the inside of the island.
What to expect on a Koh Samui experience
Island trips from Koh Samui usually last a full day, with hotel pickup, a boat, lunch and snorkelling gear. Speedboats are faster, and longtail boats are slower and closer to the water.
Bring swimwear, a towel, sun cream and a dry bag for your phone. National park fees for Ang Thong are sometimes paid on the day, so check what each tour includes.
Best time to visit
January to August is the best time for Koh Samui, with sunny weather and calm seas. October to December brings the north-east monsoon, with heavy rain and rough seas that can stop boat trips.
Getting around
A ring road goes around the island, about 50 kilometres long. Taxis, songthaews (shared pickup trucks) and rented scooters are the main ways to travel. Most tours include pickup from hotels in the main beach areas.
