About Karlovy Vary
Karlovy Vary — known in German as Karlsbad — is the most celebrated spa town in the Czech Republic, set in a wooded valley in West Bohemia where the Teplá river meets the Ohře. According to legend it was founded in the 14th century by Emperor Charles IV, who gave the town its name.
The town grew famous for its thermal springs — some thirteen mineral springs rise here, the most powerful being the Vřídlo, or Hot Spring, which jets scalding water high into the air. For centuries visitors have come to "take the cure," drinking the mineral waters from distinctive spouted cups as they walk the colonnades.
