About El Puerto de Santa María
El Puerto de Santa María, on the Bay of Cádiz where the Guadalete river meets the Atlantic, is one of the three towns of the famous "Sherry Triangle," alongside Jerez de la Frontera and Sanlúcar de Barrameda. For centuries it has been a town of sailors, merchants and winemakers.
In the age of the Carrera de Indias, El Puerto was one of Spain's key ports for trade with the Americas, and the wealth of that era survives in its grand "casas palacio" and the mirador towers built by the cargadores a Indias to watch for their returning ships. The navigator Juan de la Cosa drew his famous world map — the first to show the Americas — here, and Christopher Columbus's ship the Santa María was owned by a local family.
