Frequently asked questions

Allow two to three hours for the Acropolis itself, and another two hours or so for the Acropolis Museum at the foot of the hill. Many visitors do both on the same morning.

First thing in the morning, when it opens, or in the late afternoon. Midday brings the biggest crowds and, in summer, fierce heat on the exposed marble. Entry is by timed ticket, so book ahead in high season.

Yes, for most people. There is little on-site explanation, and a guide turns a set of ruins into the story of Periclean Athens: who built the Parthenon, what stood inside it, and what happened to its sculptures.

Graffiti has long been part of Athens, but it exploded during the financial crisis that began in 2010, when many walls became a place for protest and commentary. Psiri, Exarchia and Metaxourgeio have some of the densest collections.

Souvlaki and gyros from a street counter, spanakopita and koulouri from a bakery, loukoumades (honey-soaked doughnuts), Greek cheeses and olives from the central market, and a long meze lunch in a taverna. Coffee culture is serious here too: try a freddo espresso in summer.

Cape Sounion and the Temple of Poseidon are an easy half day, best at sunset. Delphi, home of the ancient oracle, is a full day in the mountains. For the sea, the islands of Aegina, Poros and Hydra are a short ferry ride from Piraeus.

Midday in July and August can be very hot. Plan outdoor sightseeing for early morning and evening, keep the middle of the day for museums and long lunches, and bring water, a hat and sun cream.

Athens is where much of Western history, theatre and democracy began, and the Parthenon still looks down on the city from the top of the Acropolis. But Athens is not just a ruin with a city attached. Around the ancient sites is a noisy, working capital of markets, tavernas, street art and late nights. A local guide helps with both: the stories behind the temples, and the neighbourhoods most visitors walk straight past.

About Athens

Athens has been lived in for more than three thousand years. At its heart is the Acropolis, the rock crowned by the Parthenon, built in the fifth century BC for the goddess Athena, with the Erechtheion and its famous Caryatids beside it. At the foot of the hill, the Acropolis Museum holds the original sculptures, with a glass floor over excavated streets. Nearby are the Ancient Agora, the marketplace where Socrates taught, and the Temple of Olympian Zeus.

On the slopes below lies Plaka, the oldest lived-in part of the city, with the whitewashed lanes of Anafiotika tucked under the rock. North of it, Monastiraki and Psiri are old districts of traders and craftsmen, now known for their flea market, bars and some of the city's best street art, much of it painted during the Greek financial crisis after 2010. On Athinas Street, the central market is full of delis, spice shops and bakeries. At Syntagma Square, the Evzones guards change outside Parliament, and Lycabettus Hill gives the best view over the whole city.

What to expect on a Athens experience

Most visits to Athens mix three kinds of day:

  • Ancient Athens: the Acropolis and Parthenon, the Acropolis Museum, the Ancient Agora and the other classical sites, where a guide brings the myths and the history to life.
  • The living city: walks through Plaka, Monastiraki and Psiri, street art, and food tours through bakeries, delis and the central market, tasting cheese, olive oil, honey and Greek street food.
  • Day trips from Athens: the Temple of Poseidon at Cape Sounion at sunset, the oracle at Delphi, and the nearby islands of the Saronic Gulf, such as Aegina and Hydra.

Each tour page lists its exact meeting point, what is included and the languages available on each date.

Best time to visit

April to June and September to October are the best months, warm and mostly dry. July and August regularly pass 35 °C, and the Acropolis has little shade, so go when it opens or in the late afternoon and carry water. Winter is mild and much quieter, with some rainy days, a good time for museums, food and the city's neighbourhoods.

Getting around

Central Athens is walkable: Syntagma, Plaka, Monastiraki, Psiri and the foot of the Acropolis are all within about fifteen minutes of each other, though some streets are steep or cobbled, so wear flat, comfortable shoes. The metro is clean and simple, and metro line 3 runs from Athens Airport to Syntagma and Monastiraki in about 40 minutes. The X95 express bus runs from the airport to Syntagma. Taxis are cheap by European standards. For Sounion or Delphi, a trip with transport saves you juggling intercity buses.
