Below the Royal Mile lie hidden streets where people once lived, worked and died. Mary King's Close is the only preserved 17th-century street in Edinburgh.
A guide in costume, playing a character from the Close, leads you through the underground lanes and rooms for about one hour. You hear true stories of plague, poverty and daily life in the old town.
There are 58 steps down and 38 steps up, so the tour is not suitable for prams or wheelchairs. Audio guides in several languages are available in the official app.
