The National Palace of Queluz began as a summer house for the royal family. King Pedro III turned it into a full palace in the 18th century, and it is often called the Portuguese Versailles.
Walk through the throne room, the music room and the painted royal apartments, then explore the formal gardens with fountains, statues and a canal lined with blue and white tiles.
Some areas have limited access because of restoration work. The palace is between Lisbon and Sintra.
