France is a country of endless invitation, world-famous art and architecture, some of the planet's finest food and wine, and landscapes that shift from Alpine peaks to lavender fields and Mediterranean coves. Every region tells its own delicious story.

Artista Tours connects you with local French guides who go beyond the postcard views, sharing neighbourhood bistros, market secrets, vineyard tastings and the history behind the cathedrals, chateaux and boulevards.

À propos d'France

Paris, the capital, needs little introduction, the Eiffel Tower, the Louvre and its Mona Lisa, Notre-Dame, Montmartre and the Champs-Elysees, all wrapped in cafe culture. Beyond it, the Loire Valley is studded with Renaissance chateaux like Chambord and Chenonceau, while Provence dazzles with lavender fields, Roman Arles and hilltop villages.

The French Riviera (Cote d'Azur) glitters from Nice to Cannes and Saint-Tropez; Bordeaux and Burgundy anchor legendary wine regions; and Normandy holds Mont-Saint-Michel and the D-Day beaches. Lyon is France's gastronomic capital, and the Alps offer Chamonix and Mont Blanc. French cuisine is a pillar of the culture, croissants and baguettes, cheeses and charcuterie, coq au vin, bouillabaisse and regional wines and Champagne, best enjoyed slowly at a terrace table.

La meilleure période pour visiter

Late spring (April-June) and early autumn (September-October) are ideal nationwide, with pleasant weather, gardens and vineyards in fine form, and lighter crowds. Summer (July-August) is warm and lively but busy, and many Parisians decamp on holiday.

Provence's lavender peaks in late June to mid-July, and the wine harvest colours Bordeaux and Burgundy in September. The Alps shine for skiing December to March. Highlights include Bastille Day on 14 July, the Cannes Film Festival in May and the Nice Carnival in February.

Se déplacer

France's high-speed TGV rail network is superb, connecting Paris with Lyon, Bordeaux, Marseille and beyond in just a few hours, making the train the best way to hop between cities. Within Paris, the metro, RER and buses cover everything cheaply, and the city is very walkable.

Regional TER trains and buses reach smaller towns, though a rental car is invaluable for the Loire chateaux, Provence villages and Burgundy vineyards. On the Riviera, coastal trains link the resort towns conveniently. Book TGV tickets in advance for the best fares.

Foire aux questions

Paris is the classic starting point for its landmarks and museums. Beyond it, explore the Loire Valley's chateaux, Provence and the French Riviera in the south, the wine regions of Bordeaux and Burgundy, and Normandy's Mont-Saint-Michel and D-Day beaches.

Late spring (April to June) and early autumn (September to October) offer pleasant weather and thinner crowds. Summer is warm and lively but busy, while winter suits Alpine skiing and quieter city sightseeing. Provence's lavender peaks in late June to mid-July.

Four to five days lets you enjoy Paris with a day trip. To combine Paris with a region like the Loire, Provence or the Riviera, allow 10 to 14 days, using the fast TGV trains to cover ground efficiently.

France is in the EU and Schengen Area, so many travelers including US, UK, Canadian and Australian citizens can enter visa-free for up to 90 days in a 180-day period. Check your nationality's requirements; ETIAS pre-authorization is expected to apply in the near future.

The official language is French, and while English is common in tourist areas, a few French phrases are appreciated. France uses the euro (EUR). Cards are accepted almost everywhere, but carry some cash for small bakeries, markets and rural cafes.
