Herculaneum was a Roman seaside town buried by the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 79 AD, the same eruption that destroyed Pompeii. It is smaller than Pompeii and easier to explore, and many of its houses are very well preserved, some with wooden beams, mosaics and painted walls.
