Portugal charms with its tiled facades, hilltop castles, world-class wine and a laid-back Atlantic soul. From the miradouros of Lisbon to the terraced vineyards of the Douro, every corner invites lingering.

Explore guided tours and local experiences across Portugal, from Porto's riverside cellars to the beaches of the Algarve, hosted by locals who know exactly where the best pastéis de nata come from.

Acerca de Portugal

Lisbon, the sun-drenched capital, spreads across seven hills laced with the rattling Tram 28. Explore the Moorish Alfama district, the Manueline masterpiece of Jerónimos Monastery and the riverside Belém Tower, then taste the original pastéis de nata nearby. Just west, Sintra hides fairytale palaces like the colorful Pena Palace and the mysterious Quinta da Regaleira.

Porto, in the north, drapes over the Douro River, its Ribeira quarter and Dom Luís I Bridge leading to the port lodges of Vila Nova de Gaia. From here the Douro Valley unfurls in terraced vineyards. The Algarve in the south lures with dramatic sea caves at Benagil, golden cliffs and fishing towns like Lagos. Portuguese cuisine centers on the sea: grilled sardines, bacalhau (salt cod) in countless forms, seafood cataplana, and of course custard tarts, all paired with vinho verde, Douro reds or a glass of tawny port.

Qué esperar de una experiencia en Portugal

Tours in Portugal are relaxed, flavorful and full of local character, with hosts eager to share their traditions.

  • Vintage tram and tuk-tuk rides through Lisbon's hills
  • Port wine tastings in the Gaia cellars and Douro vineyards
  • Boat trips to the Benagil sea caves along the Algarve
  • Day trips to Sintra's palaces and the coast at Cascais
  • Fado dinners and pastel de nata tasting walks

La mejor época para visitar

Spring (March–May) and autumn (September–October) offer warm, sunny days ideal for sightseeing and the Douro grape harvest. Summer (June–August) is hot and lively, perfect for the Algarve beaches but busy in Lisbon and Porto. Winters are mild along the coast, making Portugal a pleasant year-round destination.

Cómo desplazarse

Comfortable trains run by CP link Lisbon, Porto, Coimbra and Faro, with the scenic Douro line among Europe's prettiest. Buses reach smaller towns and the Algarve villages. In Lisbon and Porto, metros, trams and funiculars make getting around easy, and both cities are best explored on foot. A rental car helps for the Douro Valley, Alentejo and coastal drives, though parking in old centers is tight.

Preguntas frecuentes

Seven to ten days lets you combine Lisbon and Sintra, Porto and the Douro Valley, and a few days on the Algarve coast. A long weekend suits a single city like Lisbon or Porto beautifully.

Both are wonderful. Lisbon is larger and grander, with more day-trip options like Sintra. Porto is smaller, atmospheric and the home of port wine. If you can, visit both — a fast train links them in under three hours.

Popular options include a scenic train ride along the Douro line, a river cruise from Porto, or a guided road tour with vineyard visits. Many tours combine wine tastings at quintas with lunch and sweeping valley viewpoints.

Portugal is known for bacalhau (salt cod), grilled sardines, seafood cataplana and the beloved pastel de nata custard tart. Regional wines like vinho verde, Douro reds and port complete the experience.

Portugal uses the euro (EUR). Cards are widely accepted, but carry some cash for markets, small cafés and tips. The multibanco ATM network is reliable throughout the country.
