Sofia is one of Europe's oldest cities and one of its least known capitals. Roman streets lie under its metro stations, and medieval churches sit between communist-era blocks, with a mountain rising at the end of the main boulevard. It is compact and easy to walk, but full of history that isn't obvious at first glance. A local guide ties the layers together. Sofia is also the starting point for Bulgaria's best-known sights, from Rila Monastery to the old town of Plovdiv.
O Sofia
The Thracians settled here first, and the Romans built Serdica, a city the emperor Constantine is said to have called "my Rome". Its streets and buildings have been uncovered in the centre, and you can walk among them at the Serdica archaeological complex, next to the metro. Close by, the red-brick Rotunda of St George, from the fourth century, is the oldest building in the city. The golden domes of the Alexander Nevsky Cathedral, one of the largest Orthodox cathedrals in the world, dominate the skyline. On the edge of the city, the small Boyana Church holds medieval frescoes from 1259 and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Within a few minutes' walk of each other in the centre stand an Orthodox church, a Catholic cathedral, the Banya Bashi Mosque and the Sofia Synagogue, one of the largest in Europe, and locals call the area the "square of religious tolerance". Nearby, the old Central Mineral Baths building recalls the hot springs the city grew up around, and you can still fill a bottle at the public taps outside. The Museum of Socialist Art and the city's monuments tell the story of the communist decades. Vitosha Boulevard, the main pedestrian street, runs towards Mount Vitosha, where locals go hiking and skiing.

Most visits to Sofia mix two kinds of day:
- The city itself: walks through Roman Serdica, the churches, mosque and synagogue of the centre, and the communist-era city. Food tours cover banitsa, shopska salad and Bulgarian wine, and hikes on Mount Vitosha are right on the city's doorstep.
- Day trips across Bulgaria: Rila Monastery, Bulgaria's most famous monastery, high in the Rila mountains, and the Seven Rila Lakes. There is also Plovdiv, with its Roman theatre and colourful old town, the Boyana Church, and the rock formations of Belogradchik.

May, June and September are the best months: warm, green and ideal for walking the city and for mountain trips to Rila and Vitosha. July and August are warm but rarely extreme, as Sofia sits at around 550 metres. The Seven Rila Lakes are usually only reachable in summer and early autumn. Winters are cold and snowy, and Vitosha becomes a ski area within half an hour of the centre.

The centre is compact and easy to walk, with most major sights within about twenty minutes of each other. The metro is modern and cheap, and trams and buses cover the rest of the city. Sofia Airport is about 10 km east of the centre and is linked to it by metro. Bulgaria adopted the euro in 2026, and cards are widely accepted in the city. Signs are written in Cyrillic, with Latin letters in the centre and on public transport. Rila Monastery and the mountain lakes are hard to reach by public transport, so most visitors go on a day trip with transport.
