One full day covers the old town, the river, the bridges and the castle. Two or three days let you add day trips to Lake Bled, the Postojna Cave or the coast.

About 55 km north-west, roughly an hour by road. Bled is easily done as a half-day or full-day trip, and is often combined with Lake Bohinj or the Vintgar Gorge.

Legend says the Greek hero Jason and his Argonauts, sailing home with the Golden Fleece, stopped at a marsh here and killed a dragon. The dragon appears on the city's coat of arms and, most famously, on the four corners of the Dragon Bridge.

A Slovenian architect who reshaped Ljubljana between the two world wars, designing the Triple Bridge, the Central Market, the riverbanks and the National and University Library. His work in the city is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Yes. They are in opposite directions from Ljubljana, but each is about an hour away by road, so a full day can combine them. The Postojna Cave has timed tours, so it's worth booking ahead in summer.

Less than most Western European capitals. Slovenia uses the euro, and cafés and restaurants in the old town are reasonably priced, especially at lunchtime, when many offer a set daily menu.

Ljubljana is one of Europe's most relaxed capitals: a car-free old town along a river, under a castle on a wooded hill, and small enough to cross on foot in twenty minutes. Much of its charm comes from one architect, Jože Plečnik, who shaped its bridges, market and riverbanks in the early twentieth century. O Ljubljana

The Romans built a town called Emona here, and fragments of its walls still stand south of the centre. The old town grew up later on the far bank, between the Ljubljanica river and the castle hill. After an earthquake in 1895 much of the centre was rebuilt in the Vienna Secession and Art Nouveau styles, which is why so many facades around Prešeren Square are so ornate. The square is named after France Prešeren, Slovenia's national poet, and is framed by the pink Franciscan Church.

From the square, Jože Plečnik's Triple Bridge crosses the river into the old town. Plečnik also designed the colonnaded Central Market along the water, and his work in the city is on UNESCO's World Heritage list. Nearby, the Dragon Bridge is guarded by the green dragons that are the city's symbol. Above it all, Ljubljana Castle can be reached on foot or by funicular, and its tower looks out to the Alps on a clear day. Tivoli Park runs right into the centre, and Metelkova, a former army barracks turned artists' quarter, shows the city's alternative side.

Most visits to Ljubljana mix two kinds of day:

The city itself: walks through the old town, along the river and over Plečnik's bridges, up to the castle, and food tours tasting Carniolan sausage, štruklji, potica, local cheeses and Slovenian wine. Boat rides on the Ljubljanica give another view of the centre.
Day trips across Slovenia: Lake Bled, with its island church and cliff-top castle, and quieter Lake Bohinj in the Julian Alps. There are also the caves of Postojna and Škocjan with Predjama Castle built into a cliff, and the Venetian-style coastal town of Piran.

May, June and September are the best months: warm, green and good for walking and for the lakes and mountains. July and August are warmer and busier, and the city fills with outdoor concerts and festivals. From spring to autumn, the Open Kitchen food market takes over a square in the centre on Fridays. December brings Christmas lights and markets along the river. Winters are cold and often foggy, but the old town is quiet and atmospheric.

Poruszanie się po mieście

The old town is compact, flat and largely car-free, so walking is the easiest way to see it. The city bike-share scheme and small electric shuttles in the pedestrian zone cover longer hops. The train and bus stations sit side by side, about a fifteen-minute walk north of Prešeren Square. Ljubljana Jože Pučnik Airport is around 25 km north of the city, connected by shuttle and bus. Slovenia uses the euro. Lake Bled is about an hour away by road, and a day trip with transport is the simplest way to combine it with the caves or Lake Bohinj.
