It depends on the tour. Each listing states exactly which sites are included and which are paid separately on the day, so check the inclusions before you book. The free tour of the medina is a walking introduction and does not include paid monument entry.

No — like most working mosques in Morocco, the Koutoubia is closed to non-Muslims. Our tours take in the minaret, the gardens and the surrounding area from the outside, which is where its famous view is anyway.

Comfortable closed shoes are the main thing — the lanes are uneven and busy with mopeds. Modest clothing covering shoulders and knees is appreciated, particularly around religious sites, and in summer a hat and water are essential.

You can certainly wander alone, and you should at some point. But the medina is genuinely disorienting, and a guide gets you into the palaces and workshops with the context that makes them worth seeing — and saves you from the unofficial "guides" who attach themselves to visitors near Jemaa el-Fna.

Over Marrakesh

Founded in the eleventh century and still ringed by its red earthen walls, Marrakech is Morocco's great imperial city — the "Red City", with the snow-topped Atlas Mountains on the horizon. Its medina is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and at its centre Jemaa el-Fna shifts from orange-juice carts by day to a sprawl of food stalls, musicians and storytellers after dark. The minaret of the Koutoubia Mosque rises over all of it.

Behind the square lies the real city: the stucco and cedar courtyards of the Bahia Palace, the astonishing Saadian Tombs sealed up for two centuries, the serene Ben Youssef Madrasa, the walled calm of Le Jardin Secret, and the Mellah, the old Jewish quarter. Around them run the souks — a working warren of dyers, metalworkers, leather and spice, where the guilds still cluster street by street.

De beste tijd voor een bezoek

Spring (March to May) and autumn (September to November) are the best times to walk Marrakech — warm, dry days and the Atlas still holding snow behind the city.

Summer (June to August) regularly passes 40°C, and while the medina's covered lanes give real shade, early-morning tours are the only comfortable option. Winter brings mild, pleasant days and genuinely cold nights, so pack a jacket. If your visit falls during Ramadan, the city is quieter by day and comes alive after sunset; opening hours shift, so check your tour listing for timings.

Vervoer

The medina is a pedestrian maze — cars cannot follow most of it, and mopeds will. Walking is the only real way through, so wear closed, comfortable shoes and accept that you will lose your bearings at least once. The petit taxis (beige, metered) are cheap for hops between the medina, Gueliz and the Majorelle Garden; agree the fare or ask for the meter before setting off.

Marrakech Menara Airport (RAK) is only about 6 km from the centre, a short taxi ride or a city-bus hop. Marrakech is also on the national rail network, with direct trains to Casablanca and Rabat from the station in Gueliz.
