Gran Canaria is often called a continent in miniature. In a single day you can go from the golden dunes of the south, through pine forests and volcanic craters, to the green valleys and old sugar towns of the north. Its capital, Las Palmas, is a real Atlantic city with a historic old quarter and a long city beach. A local guide helps you see the island beyond the resorts: the mountain villages, the food and wine, and the history that ties it to Columbus and the Americas.
Over Gran Canaria
Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, the island's capital, was founded in 1478, and its old quarter, Vegueta, is one of the best-preserved colonial centres in the Canaries. Its cobbled streets lead to the Cathedral of Santa Ana and the Casa de Colón, where Christopher Columbus is said to have stopped on his first voyage to the Americas. On the other side of the city, Las Canteras is one of Europe's great city beaches, sheltered by a natural reef.
Inland, the island rises to the Roque Nublo, a basalt monolith that is the symbol of Gran Canaria, and the Pico de las Nieves, its highest point. The mountain villages of Tejeda, Teror and Artenara keep their white houses, wooden balconies and traditional sweets. In the north, Arucas is known for its huge neo-Gothic church and its rum distillery, and the Bandama Caldera is a volcanic crater with a vineyard on its slopes. In the south, the Maspalomas Dunes run down to the sea. Much of the island is a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve.

De beste tijd voor een bezoek
Gran Canaria is a year-round destination, with mild weather even in winter, which is why it is so popular from November to March. Spring and autumn are ideal for walking and for the mountains. Summer is warm rather than scorching on the coast, but the south is sunnier and hotter than the north, and the interior can be cool and cloudy while the beaches are in full sun. Bring a layer for the mountains at any time of year.

Gran Canaria Airport is on the east coast, about 20 minutes from Las Palmas and half an hour from the southern resorts. Global buses connect the capital, the airport and the main towns. Las Palmas has a good city bus network, and Vegueta is best explored on foot. The mountain roads of the interior are narrow and winding, with few buses to the villages, so most visitors explore the interior on a guided trip or by hire car. The Canary Islands use the euro.
