In Lisbon and Porto, metros, trams and funiculars make getting around easy, and both cities are best explored on foot. A rental car helps for the Douro Valley, Alentejo and coastal drives, though parking in old centers is tight.

Both are wonderful. Lisbon is larger and grander, with more day-trip options like Sintra. Porto is smaller, atmospheric and the home of port wine. If you can, visit both — a fast train links them in under three hours.
