Romania blends fairytale castles, medieval Saxon towns and some of Europe's last great wilderness. Beyond the Dracula legends lies a country of painted monasteries, folk villages and dramatic mountain roads.

Browse guided tours and local experiences across Romania, from Transylvania's cobbled squares to the peaks of the Carpathians, led by hosts who know the real stories behind the myths.

Informazioni su Romania

Bucharest, the capital, mixes Belle Époque boulevards that earned it the nickname 'Little Paris' with the colossal Palace of the Parliament, one of the world's largest buildings. Stroll the restored Old Town, the Village Museum and the leafy Herăstrău Park. North lies Transylvania, the country's heart, where Brașov's Council Square, the Black Church and nearby Bran Castle (linked to the Dracula legend) draw visitors, along with fortified Saxon towns like Sighișoara and Sibiu.

The Carpathian Mountains deliver the spectacular Transfăgărășan and Transalpina roads, brown-bear country and hiking in the Piatra Craiului range. In the northeast, the UNESCO-listed painted monasteries of Bucovina glow with vivid frescoes, while the Danube Delta offers birdlife-rich waterways. Romanian food is hearty and comforting: sarmale (cabbage rolls), mămăligă (polenta), mici grilled sausages, ciorbă sour soups, and papanași fried doughnuts topped with soured cream and jam, often accompanied by țuică plum brandy.

Il periodo migliore per visitarla

Late spring (May–June) and early autumn (September) bring warm days and beautiful colors, ideal for Transylvania and hiking. The high mountain roads like the Transfăgărășan open only from around late June to October. Winter is cold and snowy, good for skiing in Poiana Brașov and atmospheric Christmas markets in Sibiu and Brașov.

Come spostarsi

Trains run by CFR connect major cities but can be slow; intercity minibuses (maxitaxis) and buses often prove faster for regional trips. Renting a car is the best way to reach castles, mountain roads and remote monasteries, though drive cautiously on rural routes. Bucharest has a handy metro plus buses and trams, and the historic town centers are compact and walkable.

Domande frequenti

Bran Castle is marketed as 'Dracula's Castle' due to its Gothic looks, but Bram Stoker never visited and Vlad the Impaler, the historical inspiration, has only tenuous links to it. It's a beautiful, atmospheric castle worth visiting on its own merits.

Six to eight days lets you combine Bucharest with a Transylvania loop through Brașov, Sighișoara and Sibiu, plus a castle or two. Add extra time for Bucovina's monasteries or the Danube Delta.

The Transfăgărășan is a spectacular mountain highway crossing the Carpathians with hairpin bends and alpine lakes. It's typically open from late June to October, weather permitting; outside that window snow closes the highest sections. Many guided tours include it.

Romania uses the Romanian leu (RON), not the euro. Cards are widely accepted in cities, but carry cash for rural areas, small shops and monasteries.

Try sarmale (cabbage rolls), mămăligă (polenta), mici grilled sausages, ciorbă sour soups and papanași doughnuts for dessert. Wash it down with țuică plum brandy or a local Romanian wine.
